Autism Oxford Launch Oxfordshire Alert Card & Training

Autism Oxford is delighted to be providing Oxfordshire’s first Autism Alert Card Scheme.  Free to anyone on the Autism spectrum in Oxfordshire, this alert card can be used in case of an emergency.  It carries simple information about Autism, a telephone number for people to call for autism-specific advice and the name and number of a parent, carer or friend.

The card which has been funded by NHS Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire cluster and Oxfordshire County Council can also be used to alert Thames Valley Police, other emergency services and Oxfordshire organisations. It will indicate that the person carrying the card has a condition that may require special attention.

There are an estimated 6,355 people on the Autism Spectrum in Oxfordshire.  This is based on a ratio of 1:100 (Ratio source: National Autistic Society).  Many remain undiagnosed.
Autistic behaviour is easy to misinterpret.  For example, when anxious, stressed or under pressure someone on the autism spectrum may suffer a panic attack.  This may be interpreted as challenging behaviour or a temper tantrum.  They may also have a freeze response, which may look like refusal to move or speak.

The Card Scheme will:

  • Offer to people of all ages in Oxfordshire free of charge, easily identifiable and verifiable means of disclosing that they are on the autism spectrum
  • Help autistic people in difficult situations find sources of local support
  • Help Thames Valley Police, local emergency services and Oxfordshire organisations to identify they are dealing with someone who has autism
  • Promote better management of issues and situations involving people with Autism
  • Help Cardholders feel safer and more confident when out and about
  • Provide Autism Awareness Training to Police Officers and PCSOs in Oxfordshire
  • Enable Thames Valley Police to ensure all people with autism receive a fair and appropriate service from the police

We will be launching the alert card to four areas of Oxfordshire (South Oxfordshire & Vale of the White Horse, West Oxfordshire, Cherwell, & Oxford City from July 2011).

The first launch event will take place at 11:00 -12:00 Tuesday 12th July, 2011 at the Roysse Room, Abingdon Guildhall.  The launch will also be part of a wider Autism Oxford Awareness Event, with information from local organisations and services.  It will be followed by a light lunch and networking opportunity.
